The Women’s Division is off to a very
busy April 2010! The Great Taste of Grapevine was a
HUGE Success! Congratulations and Infinite Thanks are extended to Great
Taste Chair Shelley Ruddick and her amazing team of dedicated Co-Chairs and
Volunteers. Preliminary numbers
indicate over 700 people attended the event!
For
the Women’s Division the success of the Great Taste event ensures funding for
our upcoming Senior Fest and School Supply projects. Success is also a huge reward for a year
of hard work contributed by the entire team and volunteers associated with
the event. In a struggling economy it
is especially rewarding to see our community embrace our work and support the
causes. Of course, the event could
not be possible without the generous support of the companies and individuals
who sponsored the event. Special
thanks are extended once again to our “Presenting Sponsor”, The Ken Thompson
Group and Classic Chevrolet. Ken
Thompson addressed the attendees at the event and expressed excitement about
the turnout. Please remember to thank
all our sponsors when you see them in their workplaces or around town! Now we are on to our next great cause! Friday, April 30th,
the Women’s Division “Bling Team” will proudly walk in
support of Grapevine’s Relay for Life fundraiser. Shonda Schaefer, Executive Director of GRACE is the Women’s
Division team Captain for 2010.
Shonda can be reached at sschaefer@gracegrapevine.org
or 817-657-1017. We need team

The Great Taste of Grapevine…. was more than a Great Taste; It was a Great Event!
The Great Taste of Grapevine 2010
The Great
Taste of Grapevine 2010 has come to a close and what an event we put
on!! Over 700 people attended, over 35
generous sponsors were involved; over 35
delectable restaurants showed their best and over 70 Women’s Division
volunteers smiled, directed and served our community for an event they won’t
soon forget. We
introduced some new things this year…..
and brought back another. We stepped up our technology by offering on
line tickets sales for the first time, our guests enjoyed the adventure of
the Scavenger Hunt as we gave out over 45 restaurant gift certificates, we
had abounding applause when our People’s choice award winner was announced,
along with the other 5 award winners, we have our life size Henri’ “The man chef” to enjoy for
years to come AND we will forever
see our “cause” flying high over Main St. Grapevine with our NEW GREAT TASTE
BANNER! Lastly, a
sincere message of gratitude and appreciation to my sub-committee chairs for
working tirelessly to deliver the Women’s Division and our community a first
class event/fundraiser. Kathy DeMaggio, Kim Schuld, Lavon Bolech, Sandy
Urban, Carolyn Lease, Maureen Walkinshaw, Jenna Wazac and Clydene Johnson….
and many others who stepped up to the plate at the last minute… You are simply the best team I could have
asked for!! A huge
thank you to each member for your volunteer spirit and commitment! It was all
of us together that made this event such a success! Merci and
Bon Appetite! Shelley
Ruddick Great
Taste of Grapevine Chair 2010 In Memoriam… The Women’s Division lost one of its most beloved and tenured members
this month. Alberta Ingram Nettleton
died peacefully early on April 7 at the wonderful age of 93.
Alberta Ingram Nettleton A
native of Kansas, she served our country as a nurse in the Naval Nurse Corps
during World War II where she met her beloved husband Gordon, a dashing
wounded hero recuperating in the hospital she was assigned to. After the war they returned to Texas and
had one son, Gordon, Jr. Alberta was
a devoted Mother and was very involved in the PTA and all of Gordon’s
activities. In 1964 Alberta and
Gordon moved to the “country” settling in Grapevine where they were both very
active in the community. Alberta said
she found her niche by participating in all sorts of civic organizations –
she loved people and they loved her!
When the train depot was in danger of being torn down, she gathered
women from the Garden Club and other organizations in town to discuss how to
save it. They petitioned the City
Council to take it over and move it to Heritage Park on Ball Street. To help pay the expenses of the move, the
City approved the idea of having a city wide festival (now known as
GrapeFest) with all proceeds to go toward the restoration of the depot. Thus the Grapevine Historical Society was
founded by Alberta and she served as the first president. She and her dedicated group of restoration
activists saved the depot. Because it
is one of our most historic landmarks, the City later moved it back to its
original location where it stands today and serves as our Historical
Museum. Her efforts are featured in
the Grapevine Area History book and she and Gordon are also featured in “Grapevine’s
Most Unforgettable Characters.” She
served as president of the Garden Club, a director of the Chamber of Commerce
where she received the “President’s Award” for outstanding service and was
the second honoree of the “Woman of the Year” award by the Women’s Division
in 1976. She was also a long-time
volunteer “Candy-Striper” at Baylor Grapevine Hospital. Although she moved back to Dallas to be
near her son and grandchildren when her husband died, she came back to
Grapevine often to visit friends and attended the Anniversary Ball two years
ago. She was blind in the last few
years of her life but never lost her great sense of humor and positive
attitude. Alberta was a true
Grapevine treasure and she will be missed.
